Hidden away in the quiet streets off the Stary Arbat is a cheap haven for eastern food. Eastern in Moscow means food from Central Asia and the Caucasus rather than the Middle East with kebabs and laghman – a meaty noodle soup – among the dishes on offer. Most of the food is meat-based although there are some tasty stuffed peppers, good lavash bread and the almond cookies with raisins are a must. One room, usually reserved for private parties, allows you to lounge in Eastern style on luxurious.

Karen Prendergast – The End and the Beginning

Karen Prendergast, widely regarded as one of leading Irish artists of her generation, exhibits from her work of the last eight years at the IMMA. She produces art that deals with issues such as the body, mapping, landscape, power, sexuality and identity. This exhibition is her first solo museum show, having previously exhibited in a group show at the Tate Gallery in London. One aspect of the exhibition is an ongoing project of transcribing in pencil the anatomy of every capital city in the world. Called ‘The City Drawings’, the IMMA has purchased it in its entirety.

Uruguayan singer and songwriter, Jorge Drexler will perform with his customary passion at Lasal, a very hip, laid-back beach bar located some 20 minutes up the coast from Barcelona. Drexler will play songs from his fifth album and the third recorded in Spain, ‘Frontera’, a work which speaks of the indignities and oppression suffered under the military dictatorship in his country. After the concert, chill-out DJs will take over.

A little touch of Korea has arrived on the North Shore with Ilseon Baek’s Hangawi. Try the haemooljungal (spicy cow’s tripe with vegetable casserole) for bulking up or the samkeitang (chicken ginseng soup) to feel in ruddy good health just sitting there. But the essential ingredient of Korean cooking is kim chi – a fiery composition of fermented Chinese cabbage with cayenne pepper, chili and buckets of garlic and oh, some horseradish, cucumber and anything else the chef feels like adding on that particular day. Whatever form you find it, try it. Expect to pay around $20 (£8) and bring your own booze.
